Arathoon wins bronze in Florida, and earns a spot for the Pan American Games

On Sunday, sailor Enrique Arathoon won the bronze medal in the ILCA 7 category of the US Open Sailing Series Clearwater 2023, held in Florida, United States; and with it, he secured his spot for the Pan American Games Santiago 2023.

At the US Open Sailing Series Clearwater, Quique added up 18 clear points in the seven regattas and shared the podium with the Peruvian sailor Stefano Peschiera and Juan Ignacio Maegli, who earned the gold and silver medals with 6 and 12 points, respectively.

“I am so happy to be able to represent El Salvador during my third Pan American Games. It’s another step in the Olympic process, and another opportunity to win the Pan American Games. One step at a time”, Arathoon said.

31 participants signed up for the ILCA 7 category; with American, South American, Caribbean, and Central American athletes among them.

“There’s a lot to improve and polish, I think that we’re putting more hours into the in-water training sessions. I am thankful for the support”, the sailor pointed out after his first official competition of the year, which is also in the preparation route for the Central American and Caribbean Games 2023.

After the competition in Florida, Quique has planned a training camp in Puerto Rico prior to his participation in the Mallorca Championship in early April, which is part of this year’s European tour.

Arathoon’s name has been added to the list of qualified athletes to the Santiago 2023 Games, along with sport shooting athletes, in the pistol modality, Milena Morales and Jorge Pimentel, with Ana Ramírez, Johanna Pineda, and Israel Gutiérrez in rifle, who earned their spots at the XIII Shooting Championship of the Americas (CAT) that was held on November 2022 in Lima, Peru.

The list of athletes qualified for the Pan American Games also include skaters Ivonne Nóchez and Marvin Rodríguez, who qualified in September last year at the Pan American Speed Skating Championship in Ibague, Colombia.
