COSSAN2023 and Fundemas sign a sustainability agreement

Dinora Acevedo, general manager of the Organizing Committee of the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023 (COSSAN2023), and José Tomás Regalado, president of the board of directors of the Corporate Foundation for Social Action (Fundemas), signed today a cooperation agreement that seeks to achieve the sustainability of the San Salvador 2023 Games.

The goal of this alliance is to make the regional competition greener and more sustainable, and to leave a legacy of social and environmental responsibility for future sporting events in the country. The term of the agreement is from the date of signing until July 30, 2023.

“As the Organizing Committee we are looking for this event to have the least possible impact in terms of waste production, and the support of Fundemas has been a great help because it allows us to have better waste management in the Villa and also in the sports venues,” said Acevedo.

One of the main objectives of this agreement is to implement social responsibility activities that have a positive impact on the community through the promotion of initiatives that encourage greater environmental responsibility.

This partnership is expected to involve the participation of various social agents, such as volunteers, students, communicators, athletes, coaches, and the general population, among others, who will be protagonists in the execution of the programmed activities.

Both entities share a common interest in carrying out San Salvador 2023 by applying a sustained use of natural resources through the implementation of conventional recycling and “plogging” (a practice that combines outdoor exercise with waste collection), obtaining not only an approach to the Salvadoran population through healthy recreation and the potential of sports in its different branches but also reducing the environmental impact through recycling projects that contribute to improving the environmental conditions of the environment.

Some actions to be implemented through this alliance between COSSAN 2023 and FUNDEMAS are the reduction, reuse, replacement, and strengthening of the recycling value chain through sports.

This initiative aims to promote a culture of responsibility towards waste generated among the parties involved in the Games: athletes, officials, volunteers, COSSAN2023 operational personnel, and the public that will attend the events.

“This agreement is a commitment between COSSAN and Fundemas to generate a recycling culture. So, we wanted to take advantage of this major event to motivate and generate culture among all the people involved in the games. We want to motivate a change in all Salvadorans through the example of the athletes and other participants so that we learn that recycling and reusing resources are important,” stated Regalado.

According to the authorities involved in the deal, it also seeks to raise awareness on ecological issues among more than 4,000 volunteers, 5,000 athletes, 4,000 officials, 250 people from the administrative area, and more than 20,000 people from the public.

In addition, the signing of this agreement hopes to improve the collection volume and income of waste managers with recycling potential and to avoid and/or reduce the amount of recoverable waste that may end up in final disposal.

In addition, it is intended to set a precedent, promote the collection of recycled materials in sporting events, and achieve the sustainability of the XXIX Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023 by promoting the culture of recycling.

“We want the actions to reduce the impact on the issue of recyclable waste to be not only for these games but, from now on, every event and sports facility can have a procedure already established for the management of this type of waste,” said the COSSAN2023 director.
