Salvadorans knock it out of the park in Guatemala

The national baseball preliminary team of El Salvador won three games to one in the International Series that ended this Sunday at the Enrique “Trapo” Torrebiarte baseball field, against the Guatemalan team.

In this way, the blue and white team is refining details for its participation in the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023.

According to information issued by the Salvadoran Baseball Federation (Fedebeis), the national team, which is coached by the experienced Nicaraguan manager Jorge Luis Avellán, is coming from a tour around Nicaragua, where they played several preparation games against professional teams of that country and participated in the Central American Senior Baseball Championship.

In the international series against the Guatemalan team, El Salvador won by scores of 16 runs for 5, 2-0 and 6-0. The only loss was very close, with a score of 3-2, in the opening game of the match. In that game, the offensive participation of José “Chepa” Rivas stood out, who hit a two-run homer to even the score at that moment.

After the loss, the Salvadoran bats thundered for the rest of the series, just as the collective pitching did its job.

In the second game, El Salvador defeated their rival by a wide score of 16 runs to 5. Star left-hander Nelson Alfaro prevailed as the ace of the national rotation to take the victory, while young Jefferson Gutiérrez relieved him.

In the third game, Rafael Mena and Jhonny Villatoro worked together from the mound to lead the team to a 2-0 shutout victory, a game in which the home team only had one hit.

The series ended on Sunday with a 6-0 win, with outstanding performances by starter José Roca and reliever Adrián Jiménez, who limited their opponents to two hits.

Manager Avellán counted on Wilfredo Jiménez, Jason Flores, Emerson Bonilla, Edwin Argueta, and José Márquez, who rotated in the outfield, while Melvin Deras, Carlos Cortéz, Benjamín Pocasagre and José Rivas were distributed in the infield. Estuardo Guevara was the starting catcher, with the support of Juan José Mendizabal. The pitching staff was composed of Héctor Martínez (also playing with CF), Adrián Jiménez, Rafael Mena, Nelson Alfaro, José Roca, and Jefferson Gutiérrez.

Eduardo Palacios (pitching) and Carlos Martínez (batting) joined Avellán on the coaching staff.

The preparation plan will continue with other international competitions in the coming months before the San Salvador 2023 Games, to be held at the end of June.
