The U-22 national football team is getting into shape for the Central American and Caribbean Games

The U-22 men’s national football team of El Salvador started with their preparation for their participation in the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023 that will be held in the country from June 23rd to July 8th.

Coach Edgar Henriquez worked with a group of 25 players, most of them from first and second division, and even from the reserve team.

The country will host the regional event for the third time, and football generates great expectations.

In the Central American and Caribbean Games 2002, the El Salvador national football team took advantage of their condition as locals, earning a historical medal in men’s football by defeating Mexico 4-3 in the penalty shootout after Josué “Mochila” Gáldamez managed to score the 1-1 equalizer. The match was played on December 7th of the same year.

“When there is a precedent that demonstrates that it was possible, there is hope to try it again. We are going to find the way to be in the podium to bring happiness to the people. We are going for it, but it will require arduous work and to take advantage of our condition as locals. Not only that, but we will be the protagonists, and we will be fighting to earn a medal”, he explained.

According to the coach, at the last minute he included Francis Castillo and Luis Aguirre, from Philadelphia and Denver respectively, in the practice. “Most players are from the local league, players from international leagues will only be considered by recommendation. I dare say that most of the national team will consist of local players. I hope we can put together a good team, but we are not closing our doors to anybody”, Henríquez stated.
